The process of the digital text creation was based upon sound of the word for the most part. Being that English is not my first language and not being able to learning it properly, especially cursive old English. I had to ask for help from my teammates around me or my professors that were there to help. The process of this assignment was to understand how to transcribe the feelings and the meaning of the people of the past to this modern age, so people can have access to this transcribe.

With the connection of the documents I had was pretty slim to none because I have never heard of the Moravian lives till I enrolled into this class. However, I was surprised by the fact that these letters had much more meaning to it than I imagine. When doing the section that I was assigned to do there wasn’t many people, dates and etc. ,but there were a lot of traits or characteristics that describe the situation of the event or a person. It captivated me in seeing how these people from the past were able put emotions into the paper with different metaphors in a weird way that captivated me. While doing this assignment it taught me how to be more openly aware that I am not going get it on the first try when transcribing a document because sometimes a document can be blurry or really hard to read.

To get a precise digital text I had to re-read the pages that I was assigned. The reason for it is to see if there were any errors in spelling and to see if the a line makes sense to the whole story. Also, just talking to ones own group members to see their perspective in this matter is a huge advantage to see if this correct.

I had the opportunity to transcribe quite a few documents within the Moravian Lives project, which I had never done before. At first, I was reluctant to begin reading old cursive handwriting, but once I began the assignment my opinion quickly changed. Through this assignment I was able to read and transcribe the works of Henry Unger, Rosine Tanneberger, and Anna Elizabeth Rauch.

Some of these readings were very difficult to understand, due to the many grammatical mistakes and illegible handwriting, but I enjoyed working through it. Every time that I was able to transcribe a word that gave me difficulty, I couldn’t help but feel satisfied. Once I had all of my documents typed, I then read them over and found myself very interested in what the original authors had written. It really helped my understanding of what the author was trying to convey by reading the documents when they were typed out and “uncoded” in some instances. It was very helpful working in a group for this project because when one of us was troubled by a word or phrase we could work through it together. It made the process easier and more enjoyable.

In the Henry Unger document, I was able to read a brief account of the life and faith of Ober Peyle from 1721 to 1750. It was a little confusing to understand, but I believe that Henry Unger was speaking about him as a sinner who was forgiven and joined his congregation. In the second document I transcribed, I learned about the life Rosine Tanneberger and her journey to find rest for her “soul.” Lastly, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Brendan on the Anna Elizabeth Rauch document. We both found this document to be very hard to understand, but concluded that it was an account of her journey from Jamaica to Mesopotamia.

Assignment #1

The understanding of how the transcription of a material document affects the researcher’s connection with that document. In my personal experience, transcribing the Moravian Lives piece in specifics the Samuel Tippet piece it was something that I had never done before. I have never completed a project similar to this one which is why I genuinely enjoyed doing so. It was interesting to me reading the work that the people of the Moravian Church had written. My group’s piece in particular was very religious and I’m assuming that this aspect was similar to a lot of the other groups’ works. I had never learned about these people before and it was intriguing to learn about them by reading their work and transcribing. It affects my understanding because it was almost like I was reading their journal or diary; it was a collection of their thoughts and at times it was super personal. There were also a few times because there were a few discrepancies within the text. Sometimes it was difficult to read and also there were misspellings. Perhaps this is how they spelled it at this certain time period, or just human error.

The process of digital text creation for my group started with dividing up who would transcribe what pages. After, we began to ‘decode’ in my mind. I would read the page and try to understand it best I could and later transcribe it. I would normally bold words I was unsure about or place a ‘?’ if I had no idea and check with my group partners after finishing the full page. I would tag people and places after I finished transcribing the page because I found it easier to do since the page told a little story and I started to pick up on words that were used often such as brother. I learned that this word needed to be tagged and was being used in a religious manner. After finishing all of my assigned pages, my group members double checked to make sure that all of our pages were both correctly transcribed and tagged. I felt that I had a connection to the documents because of how personal they were. For example, in some of the pages I transcribed the author spoke about their heart breaking and several emotions such as sadness and despair. I felt like I knew the character because of how deeply they were speaking and because I was rewriting their own words which no one had done before. Transcribing the Moravian manuscripts was a very interesting, as well as a rewarding experience. My task was to transcribe the Moravian manuscripts to create a digital edition by using a photo of the original archival document from archives in Bethlehem and London. To transcribe, I utilized the transcription desk on the Moravian Lives website, which was a very neat platform.

At first, the pages I was assigned by my group leader to transcribe seemed daunting. I had not primarily written or read cursive writing since the third grade, so reading the Moravian manuscripts was difficult at first. I felt a lot of pressure to be accurate in my transcription because I knew that if I transcribed something incorrectly, there would be negative effects on my work later in the course and the research project as a whole. Over time, recognizing words and abbreviations became easier, allowing me to transcribe the documents faster. The group setting made it particularly simple for me to get help when I was stuck on a word or unsure of an abbreviation. Specifically, my team (Brendan, Olivia, and Ethan) would help one another whenever they ran into trouble and look over each other’s documents to ensure accuracy. It was great to have such a strong group, especially when I just needed a second pair of eyes (and sometimes third) on my document.

The pages I was assigned detailed the lives of Joesph Lingard and Henry Unger. Over the days I spent transcribing the pages, I feel that I have been able to better understand the Moravians because I walked in the shoes of both Henry and Joesph. I look forward to the work to come as I will able to delve deeper into the lives of Henry and Joesph by doing text analysis and mapping.
